Curatorial Narrative The landscape genre, by the mid-nineteenth century, had undergone significant transformations in response to Romanticism’s emphasis on expressive emotion and Naturalism’s attention to scientific detail. Franois-Nicolas Chifflart’s “Landscape” (c. 1865-68) embodies this tension between emotive and factual representation.
