Curatorial Narrative Flix Ziem’s “Aqua alta” emerges from the era of late 19th-century Impressionism, when artists sought to break free from traditional representational constraints and capture the fleeting effects of light. The artist’s technique in this work is characterized by an impasto brushwork that imbues the composition with a tactile quality, as if the very surface of the painting were a topographical terrain. Ziem’s palette is one of rich golds, deep blues, warm reds, and soft pinks, which he employs to evoke not only the shimmering water but also the atmospheric weight of the surrounding landscape.As “Aqua alta” is enlarged to its actual size of 58×44, its chromatic structure comes into sharper relief.
