Curatorial Narrative Frank Arthur Nankivell’s “A man hiding indictments behind his back” (1901) situates itself within the satirical illustration tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The artist’s fine brushwork imbues the figure with a sense of studied nonchalance, as if he is deliberately obscuring something from view. Nankivell achieves this effect through a masterful deployment of chiaroscuro, where areas of deep shadow serve to underscore the subject’s reticence.As we consider this work in its enlarged state (44×70), we find that the black and white palette yields a chromatic structure that is at once spare and deliberate. The spatial depth created by Nankivell’s judicious use of negative space allows for an atmospheric weight that feels almost palpable.
